17-year-old Richard celebrated his birthday in September, but not in the way many of us would. Birthdays are a time for family celebrations; Richard's 67-year-old father was in hospital, having lost his job a month before. Regardless, Richard, who lives in a standard-size house close to Jesmond with his eight brothers and sisters, is hopeful that by the time his 18th birthday comes around, things will be better.
"I believe the free medical treatment may help him recover soon." With good help will come good fortune, Richard hopes. "He's looking for a new job as he is unemployed.”
Unlike the positive attitude towards the NHS, the Jesmond resident Mr Barry, a landlord, thinks differently. More than a quarter of NHS and social care services in England are failing to meet all the essential standards they should, according to reports. Pop Up Newsroom talked to both to find their stories.
