In an unprecedented joint call for a national day of strike on the 31st of October, the three University staff Unions claimed one percent increase of salary. Union members held picket lines at their University while lectures and University services were suspended across the UK. Twenty-one cities were touched by the strike across the country.
Strikers held picket lines all around Newcastle University campus before they gathered at 1:00 pm at the Monument, a public place in the heart of the Tyneside city. Union leaders called for resistance against the policy led by University administrations and government.
